If your kitchen sink is lacking the handy convenience of a garbage disposal, do not fear! There are plenty of ways you can make living without a garbage disposal easy and (hopefully) clog free!
Strainers
A common woe of those without a garbage disposal is clogs. While you may scrape leftover scraps off the plate and into the garbage can, there’s usually a few straggler pieces of rice, veggies, or meat. These bits of food will be rinsed into the drain and overtime will form a clog and restrict draining.
One of the best ways to keep this from happening is with a mesh strainer. This will live in your sink, overtop of your drain and keep anything but liquids from getting past. Be sure to empty the contents often into the garbage and clean the mesh about every week with baking soda to avoid any yucky build-up.
Cleaning The Sink
Even when you have a garbage disposal, your sink is always susceptible to developing unwanted smells. While you’re cleaning your mesh strainer, take time to clean up the rest of the sink as well. After all, we only want the smells of your delicious cooking to fill the kitchen!
Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda down the drain and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes before pouring white vinegar down as well. Let it sizzle and work its magic before flushing it all down with boiling water. This is sure to get rid of any bacteria causing smells.
Compost
Composting may seem like something that requires a lot of effort, but if you don’t have a garbage disposal, you’re already separating your scraps of food anyway! Simply toss your fruits, vegetables, and coffee grounds into a sealable bin and begin composting in your backyard or drop it off at your local composting program if your neighborhood has one.
